JOB PURPOSE
To provide safe, high-quality, evidence-based nursing care to students and emergency response to staff, and visitors within an international and boarding school environment during the main school and also the Summer Camp.
The School Nurse is responsible for assessing and managing illness and injury, providing emergency and first-aid care, administering medications and treatments, coordinating with families and external healthcare professionals, and supporting the physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing of students.
The role also carries significant responsibility for safeguarding and child protection, ensuring that student welfare and safety remain central to all aspects of nursing practice.
KEY TASKS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Professional Nursing Practice
Practise in accordance with Swiss nursing regulations, applicable professional standards, Croix-Rouge requirements, and NMC guidance (if applicable).
Provide evidence-based, patient-centred nursing care.
Maintain confidentiality and comply with applicable Swiss data protection requirements.
Maintain professional boundaries and uphold high standards of professional conduct.
Participate in continuing professional development, mandatory training, and safeguarding education.
Maintain competence in emergency response, first aid, medication administration, and relevant clinical procedures.
Clinical Nursing Care
Provide nursing care to students, staff, and visitors during scheduled shifts.
Assess and manage acute and chronic illnesses, injuries, and health conditions.
Conduct nursing assessments and develop appropriate care plans.
Monitor students' health and recognise signs of deterioration requiring escalation or referral.
Provide first aid and emergency care in accordance with relevant Swiss and Croix-Rouge standards.
Refer students to doctors, hospitals, emergency services, or other healthcare professionals when clinically appropriate.
Administer prescribed medications and treatments safely and maintain accurate medication records.
Support vaccination programmes and infection prevention and control procedures in accordance with applicable Swiss guidance.
Provide health advice and appropriate emotional support to students.
Maintain accurate and contemporaneous electronic medical records.
On Call and Overnight Nursing
Remain on call and available throughout the scheduled shift to respond to student health needs.
Respond promptly to urgent and unexpected illnesses, injuries, and medical concerns.
Provide overnight nursing care and observation to unwell students.
Monitor students in the Health Centre and, when required, coordinate care with boarding/house staff.
Escalate concerns appropriately to senior clinical staff, parents, doctors, emergency services, or other healthcare professionals.
Provide clear and accurate clinical handovers to ensure continuity of care.
Maintain calm, professional decision-making during urgent and potentially stressful situations.
Individual Student Care
Develop and maintain individual health and care plans in collaboration with students, parents, house staff, wellbeing teams, and external healthcare professionals.
Consider students' capacity to consent to treatment in accordance with applicable professional and legal requirements.
Communicate with parents/guardians regarding significant illness, injury, treatment, and follow-up while respecting confidentiality.
Support students with ongoing medical, physical, emotional, and wellbeing needs.
Promote student independence and encourage appropriate self-management of health conditions.
Safeguarding and Child Protection
Actively promote and follow the school's Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy.
Maintain awareness of indicators of abuse, neglect, exploitation, and other safeguarding concerns.
Record safeguarding concerns accurately, objectively, and promptly.
Report concerns immediately through the school's established safeguarding procedures and to the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
Maintain appropriate professional boundaries with students at all times.
Participate in regular safeguarding and child-protection training.
Contribute to a culture of vigilance, safety, and student welfare across the school community.
Health Promotion and Education
Promote healthy lifestyles and positive health behaviours among students.
Provide age-appropriate health advice and education.
Support school-wide wellbeing and pastoral initiatives.
Contribute to health and wellbeing discussions, workshops, clinics, and educational activities.
Keep up to date with relevant health promotion, adolescent health, and safeguarding guidance.
Medication and Clinical Resources
Safely administer, store, monitor, and document medications in accordance with prescriptions, care plans, and applicable regulations.
Maintain appropriate medication records and stock control.
Monitor expiry dates and ensure medications are stored securely.
Maintain and restock first-aid kits and emergency medical supplies.
Ensure appropriate storage and disposal of clinical waste and medical materials.
Assist with ordering and distribution of medical supplies and equipment.
Administration and Documentation
Maintain accurate, confidential, and up-to-date medical records.
Record all clinical consultations, assessments, treatments, medications, and interventions in the school's health database.
Complete accident, incident, and medico-legal documentation when required.
Support insurance-related documentation and reporting.
Assist with Health Centre administration and daily operational requirements.
Maintain appropriate records relating to medical supplies, expenditure, and resources.
Health, Safety and Risk Management
Promote health and safety within the Health Centre and wider school environment.
Contribute to health-related risk assessments for school trips, residential activities, sports, events, and other activities.
Provide advice regarding medical considerations and appropriate health precautions for school activities.
Ensure Health Centre procedures comply with relevant health and safety requirements.
Support infection prevention and control measures throughout the school.
Communication and Multidisciplinary Collaboration
Work collaboratively with nurses, doctors, boarding/house staff, teachers, pastoral teams, wellbeing staff, safeguarding staff, and school leadership.
Liaise with parents and guardians regarding student healthcare needs.
Coordinate care with external doctors, hospitals, therapists, specialists, and other healthcare professionals.
Participate in multidisciplinary meetings relating to student health, welfare, and safeguarding.
Provide effective clinical handovers to ensure continuity and safety of care.
Maintain confidentiality and professionalism in all verbal and written communication.
Working Hours
Position with scheduled shifts that may include day, evening, night, weekend, and other unsocial hours.
On call responsibilities are incorporated within the scheduled shift, requiring the nurse to remain available and responsive to student health needs throughout the assigned duty period.
Provide overnight nursing care and monitoring when rostered, including support for students in the Health Centre and boarding houses.
To provide nursing support during Summer Camp and other school activities.
